Tensile Test Experiment

After performing this experiment, the learner will be able to:

  • Understand the principle and significance of tensile testing of engineering materials.
  • Study the behavior of materials subjected to axial tensile loading.
  • Plot and interpret the stress–strain curve obtained from a tensile test.
  • Identify important points on the stress–strain curve such as the proportional limit, elastic limit, yield point, ultimate tensile strength, and fracture point.
  • Determine mechanical properties including:
    1. Young’s Modulus (Modulus of Elasticity)
    2. Yield Strength
    3. Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS)
    4. Breaking Strength
    5. Percentage Elongation
    6. Percentage Reduction in Area
  • Differentiate between the tensile behavior of ductile and brittle materials.
  • Relate the experimental results to the design and selection of engineering materials used in civil and structural engineering applications.
