Shear Test Experiment
Procedure
- Measure the dimensions of the test specimen accurately.
- Place the specimen in the shear test attachment and secure one end in the upper grip and the other end in the lower grip.
- Switch on the Universal Testing Machine (UTM).
- Apply the load gradually by operating the head control lever.
- Continue loading until the specimen fails in shear.
- Record the failure load at which the specimen shears.
- Stop the machine and remove the broken specimen.
- Repeat the experiment for additional specimens and determine the average shear strength.
Virtual Procedure
- Start the experiment by clicking the Play button.
- Observe the movement of the upper loading block and the shear force applied to the specimen.
- As the load increases, observe the deformation of the specimen.
- Continue the simulation until the specimen fails under double shear and the middle portion separates.
- Observe the failure load and the calculated double shear strength values displayed in the observation table.
- Compare the results obtained from different trials.
- Use the Pause, Play, and Restart controls to observe the experiment at different stages.
