Shear Test Experiment

Procedure

  1. Measure the dimensions of the test specimen accurately.
  2. Place the specimen in the shear test attachment and secure one end in the upper grip and the other end in the lower grip.
  3. Switch on the Universal Testing Machine (UTM).
  4. Apply the load gradually by operating the head control lever.
  5. Continue loading until the specimen fails in shear.
  6. Record the failure load at which the specimen shears.
  7. Stop the machine and remove the broken specimen.
  8. Repeat the experiment for additional specimens and determine the average shear strength.

Virtual Procedure

  1. Start the experiment by clicking the Play button.
  2. Observe the movement of the upper loading block and the shear force applied to the specimen.
  3. As the load increases, observe the deformation of the specimen.
  4. Continue the simulation until the specimen fails under double shear and the middle portion separates.
  5. Observe the failure load and the calculated double shear strength values displayed in the observation table.
  6. Compare the results obtained from different trials.
  7. Use the Pause, Play, and Restart controls to observe the experiment at different stages.
