Torsion Test Experiment

After performing this experiment, the learner will be able to:

  • Understand the principle and significance of torsion testing of engineering materials.
  • Study the behaviour of circular shafts subjected to twisting moments (torque).
  • Measure the angle of twist produced due to an applied torque.
  • Plot and interpret the torque–twist relationship of the material.
  • Determine the Modulus of Rigidity (Shear Modulus) of the material.
  • Verify the torsion equation for circular shafts within the elastic limit.
  • Understand the variation of shear stress across the cross-section of a shaft.
  • Relate the experimental results to the design of shafts, axles, drive systems, and other torque-transmitting machine components.
