Impact Test Experiment

After performing this experiment, the learner will be able to:

  • Understand the principle and significance of impact testing of engineering materials.
  • Study the behaviour of materials subjected to sudden impact loading.
  • Understand the purpose of providing a notch in the test specimen.
  • Measure the energy absorbed by the specimen during fracture.
  • Determine the impact toughness (impact strength) of the material using the Izod impact test.
  • Differentiate between ductile and brittle fracture based on the energy absorbed during impact.
  • Relate the impact properties of materials to their applications in engineering structures and machine components subjected to dynamic loading.
