Compression Test Experiment

Procedure

  1. Measure the dimensions of the test specimen at three different locations along its height to determine the average cross-sectional area.
  2. Ensure that the ends of the specimen are flat and smooth so that they make proper contact with the compression plates.
  3. Place the specimen centrally between the upper and lower compression plates of the testing machine.
  4. Align the specimen such that the center of the moving head is vertically above the center of the specimen.
  5. Apply the compressive load gradually by moving the movable head of the machine.
  6. Record the applied load and the corresponding deformation at regular intervals.
  7. Continue loading until the specimen fails or undergoes significant deformation.
  8. Calculate the corresponding compressive stress and strain values.
  9. Plot the stress-strain curve using the calculated values and study the compressive behaviour of the material.

Virtual Procedure

  1. Start the experiment by clicking the Play button.
  2. Observe the compression of the specimen in the simulation window.
  3. As the simulation progresses, observe the values of load, stress, strain, and deformation.
  4. Note how the specimen deforms with increasing compressive load.
  5. Observe the stress-strain graph generated during the simulation.
  6. Use the displayed values and graph to study the compressive behaviour of the material.
  7. The simulation can be Paused, Played, or Restarted at any stage to observe the parameters more carefully.
